Analyzing the latest alleged ET video

Jason McClellan | May 05, 2011 | 0 comments

A video was published to the internet on Monday, May 2nd, allegedly depicting an extraterrestrial who was supposedly recovered following a UFO crash. At least two sources claim to have received the video from an anonymous source, along with the promise of six more videos still to come.

The website posted the video to their website and YouTube channel, with an accompanying story suggesting that the extraterrestrial in the video could possibly be “a survivor of the Roswell UFO crash that occurred over sixty years ago in New Mexico.” Michael Cohen, the author of this story, further states that the video is “allegedly part of a much larger collection of footage that was filmed by government agents working on top secret UFO and alien matters between the years 1942 and 1969.”

The Alien Disclosure Group also claims to have received the video from an anonymous source, and they too posted it to their YouTube channel and their Facebook page.

But from whom did Cohen receive the details for his story? And who provided the video to these two sources?

The Source

After investigating the origins of this video, Grant Cameron of was able to determine that a woman by the name of Judy Fältskog claims to be the source of the video. She told Cameron that she “paid a lot of money for it and spent [two] weeks in Antarctica to arrange the sale of this video.” The video was posted to YouTube by Fältskog at

But who is this Judy Fältskog?

Through his investigation, Cameron determined that this Judy Fältskog is the same Judy Fältskog who, in 2010, claimed to be an astronomer working for NASA, and announced that she had intercepted and deciphered an intelligent signal from a nearby star. As Cameron points out, Fältskog’s credentials and claims turned out to be false. And research into Fältskog revealed interesting results including a history of hoaxing, identity changes, and even a sex change.

Members of the website investigated Fältskog’s history, determining that she had previously been James Van Greunen, a South African UFO enthusiast, who alleged involvement in the recovery of a UFO. After being exposed as a fraud, Van Greunen allegedly left South Africa, moved around the world, and had a sex change operation.

Fältskog told Cameron that “there is a lot more footage of this film to be released, [more than] 180 minutes of it as well as other more interesting footage.” But this person’s dubious background strongly supports the notion that this ET video is nothing more than a hoax. It also raises doubt that Fältskog is indeed the source of the video.

Fältskog and Cohen seem to have only uploaded this one ET video, while the Alien Disclosure Group uploaded a second video on the same day, which allegedly depicts the downing and recovery of a UFO and ETs by the air force. Both videos are similar aesthetically, supposedly making them from the same batch of “leaked” videos.

But to add to the mysterious origin of the video(s), a YouTube user by the name of Ivan0135 uploaded the ET video a day earlier—on May 1st—and the UFO video was uploaded on April 13th. Interestingly, “South Africa” and “Kalahari Desert” are among the string of descriptive keywords attached to the ET video uploaded by Ivan0135. This suggests a connection between Ivan0135 and Judy Fältskog.

The UFO video uploaded by Ivan0135 adds to the confusing origin of these two videos. That video begins by showing a blurry logo with black bars blocking out text above and below the logo. Another video on YouTube that claims to show footage of an alien autopsy in Russia displays the same logo at the beginning, without the black bars. We were informed by Croatian radio host Giuliano Marinkovic that this logo is a KGB logo. So this adds the question: Why would a video alleging to show a U.S. military chase and recovery of a UFO begin with the KGB logo?

Fuzzy logo from the UFO video on the left, clean KGB logo on the right

Technical oddities

The mysterious and questionable source of the video isn’t the only red flag indicating a hoax. Several technical elements within the video elicit skepticism. For starters, there are multiple versions of the video floating around the internet. The video posted by the Alien Disclosure Group is completely silent, while the video posted by and by Fältskog has an almost comically loud clicking sound, supposedly from a projector. First of all, film cameras of that era didn’t record sound. Secondly, while it has been suggested that the camera was filming a projector screen, it seems unlikely that an audio recording would have been made and added to the film when the only audible noises are those from the projector.

The user VParanormal1 analyzed the film’s audio and, based on the clicking sound, determined that the assumed projector was moving at a speed of twelve frames-per-second. He points out that projectors from the period of which the film supposedly originated (1940s) generally operated at speeds of eighteen frames-per-second and faster. This would indicate that either the speed of the videos has been reduced for some reason, that the noise is of something other than a projector, or that the projector noise was added from another source for effect.

The Krasnogorsk-3 16mm wind-up camera (credit:

It has been suggested that the clicking sound heard in the video could be from a spring-wound film camera like the Krasnogorsk-3, which apparently operates very loudly and has the option to shoot at twelve frames-per-second—the speed of the clicking in the video. While this could explain the speed of the clicking, it still doesn’t explain why audio would have been recorded at all.

Interestingly, another variation of this video was posted to YouTube on May 2nd by Vernon James. At the end of the video, James claims to have added the “projector” sound to the video to make it more interesting than a video with no audio. However, the Ivan0135 video was uploaded to YouTube on May 1st, complete with the odd “projector” sound.

Improperly formatted time code in lower left

Another technical issue with the video is the time code displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the video. The text that introduces the video says the footage was shot between 1942 and 1969. Time code wasn’t developed until the late 1960s, so it may have been added to the film then, or even much later. However, in the video, the time code is of very poor quality and fades in and out for the duration of the film. Additionally, the time code displayed in the video doesn’t match standard time code format. Time code is displayed as “hh:mm:ss:ff,” where hh=hours, mm=minutes, ss=seconds, and ff=frames. The time code in the video does not follow this format.

The vertical 'scratch' line over the number 6

The film, overall, is very low quality with seemingly excessive graininess and film damage, suggesting the film was “aged” artificially using video effects software. “Old movie” effects filters are readily available in most video editing programs that easily take a video and make it look like an old movie by adding flickering, grain, and other noise. The time code in the video supports this theory. At several points in the video, the time code seems to have its own independent “old movie” filter applied to it. If you watch closely, at thirty one seconds into the video, the last two digits of the time code are “46.” A vertical line appears briefly over the number “6,” but is isolated to the height of the number, indicating that an “old movie” filter could have been applied to the time code layer independently.

The various versions of this video are another peculiarity. The video posted by the Alien Disclosure Group appears to have been edited by the group to remove the projector sound and to add their own titles, including a “Thanks for watching” message at the end of the video. Additionally, the Alien Disclosure Group’s version of the video has an extra eleven seconds of the alleged ET added to the end of the video. But looking at the time code reveals that this “extra” footage is simply the footage from the beginning of the video, but oddly in reverse for some reason.

The Hoax

Nick Pope examining the video (credit: IVN)

On Wednesday, May 4th, the British media company ITN interviewed Nick Pope, who used to investigate UFOs for Britain’s Ministry of Defence, about the video. After watching the video, Pope said the video is one of the best hoaxes he has ever seen. He further stated:

“This video isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. Believers will go on believing. Skeptics will go on thinking it’s a load of nonsense. If anything, a film like this is going to polarize people’s beliefs. Those who believe in UFOs and extraterrestrials will say, ‘This proves my point. I was right all along.’ Skeptics are going to say, ‘It’s such an obvious fake.’”

There are many red flags indicating this video is simply a hoax. The purpose of the hoax is unknown at this point. But with the flood of extraterrestrial-themed Hollywood movies, television shows, and video games, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the video is part of a marketing campaign for some upcoming release. With the overly-aged film look, the upcoming J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg movie Super 8 might seem a likely candidate. But after reviewing analysis of the Super 8 movie trailer done by others, it appears that the extraterrestrial in Super 8 is some sort of shape-shifting, more animal-like creature than the Roswell “grey” extraterrestrial depicted in the YouTube video.

The creator of the video, and the purpose behind it, may never be identified. But then again, so much about this video was already discovered within twenty-four hours of its release. It is unfortunate that so many people fall so quickly for videos like this without taking the time for close examination. Sadly, hoaxed videos are quite common, and therefore a degree of skepticism is essential when watching any UFO or ET video.

If history is any indication, it is only a matter of time before the mainstream media latches onto this story, running with few details, and performing minimal research.

Visitors buzz the Arafura Games

MATT CUNNINGHAM   |  May 13th, 2011

A PAIR of UFOs have invaded the Top End to check out the Arafura Games, the NT's leading UFO-ologist said last night.

Alan Ferguson said he saw the flashing craft flying together in unison above his Acacia Hills home early yesterday. "In 30 years of UFO spotting I have never, ever seen two of them moving together like this," he said.

He said there was no chance he was seeing double.

"I was sober - I had only just woken up bro. All I had to drink was a cup of tea." Mr Ferguson said the UFOs were probably in town to check out the Arafura Games being held in Darwin this week.

"When big things are happening they always tend to be around the joint to give a bit of a flash here and there," he said. "It was all happening bro, believe me."

Mr Ferguson said he woke just before 5am yesterday and had a feeling there could be some "activity".

Your Say

"We hope you enjoyed Our contribution. We would appreciate donations to the Salvation Army in Our name !!!"
Mentor of the Universe

"I walked outside and looked around for a while," he said.

It was what he saw about 30 minutes later that shocked the experienced UFO spotter.

"It was like I had seen two of these satellites but they were together," he said.

"In all these years I have been looking up in the sky I have never seen two satellites transverse with each other. These two were going from one side of the sky to the other, next to each other."

As a result of the sighting Mr Ferguson has bumped up to high the "UFO activity" level on his website, www. au

He says he expects this UFO season, which co-incides with the Darwin dry season, to be a bumper one.

Could Kepler Detect Alien Artifacts?

Analysis by Ray Villard

Fri May 13, 2011 06:02 AM ET

Could NASA's Kepler planet-hunting space telescope stumble upon E.T.'s attempt at interstellar communication via a giant orbiting billboard?

SETI veteran scientist Jill Tarter pointed me to this imaginative prospect after reading my recent posting about Kepler’s potential to detect rings around extrasolar planets.

Kepler can't directly photograph exoplanets. But the dimming of the parent star they pass in from of (or transit) provides a tell-tale signature of the way the planet is blocking light from the star. When plotting brightness vs. time on a simple graph, a momentary and very small drop in the star's brightness traces a dimple pattern in the stars light curve.

SLIDE SHOW: Top 10 Places to Find Alien Life

But imagine how startled Kepler scientists would be if the light curve of a transiting body was a crazy set of zigzag lines, like the wiggle on seismic detector strip chart.

At first glance, it would mean the body was not a spherical planet. The more complicated the pattern the more complicated the silhouette of the body would be. Simulations would eventually be used to reconstruct the geometry.

What if the occulting body turned out to be a square, triangle or diamond in shape? After re-observing numerous times and ruling out every possible natural explanation -- and instrument defects -- Kepler astronomers would cautiously suggest it was a humongous artificial construction placed into orbit about the star.

A transiting artificial 'shadowgram' was proposed by Luc F. A. Arnold of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence in Paris in 2005. But now we have an observatory aloft capable of actually testing this hypothesis.

Such data would no doubt be kept confidential until a scientific peer-review. But in the age of the Internet, good luck keeping the wraps on such a bombshell!

But hold on. The extraterrestrial builders would need to make the billboard the size of a terrestrial planet! Therefore the civilization would need to be significantly more advanced than ours, and certainly be a space-faring species with a big budget for super-engineering feats.

ANALYSIS: Are Alien Artifacts in Our Solar System?

Extraordinarily lightweight "gossamer" but opaque material would have to be developed and assemble into a sheet thousands of miles across. It would somehow have to be built to offset the pressure of the stellar wind that would tend to push it away from the star.

The beauty of this idea is that it is a passive signal requiring no broadcast energy or targeting. And, it is detectable over a sizeable volume of the Galaxy. Nor does the billboard require any long-term commitment for maintenance by the host civilization. Set it up and forget it. If the home planet's space budget dries up, so what? In principle a space shade could be designed to last for millennia and even outlast the lifespan of its civilization.

An alternative approach proposed by Arnold is to have a freight train of objects successively transit the star sequentially, and in a distinguishable manner. "At each period, we would observe a series of transits whose number and timing would claim its artificial nature and a will to communicate," he wrote. For example the sequential transit could communicate a series of prime numbers or a binary code.

The billboard would need to be placed close to the star, far inside its habitable zone, so that successive transit could be seen every few days.

Could there be at least once super-civilization within Kepler’s field of view that is winking back at us?

UFO sightings increasing in Asia with U.K. and FBI alien files confirming trend

Submitted by Dave Masko on 2011-05-11

BRAY’S POINT, Ore. – Talk of regular UFO sightings at this Pacific Ocean vantage point -- here at the very edge of the Oregon coast at Bray’s Point -- seems to “wrap around us like water around a rock,” states a member of the Oregon UFO “watcher” group who’s flying high with new once top secret British and FBI files that showcase drawings of a family friend, Kenneth Arnold, who on June 24, 1947, reported seeing “nine brilliantly bright objects flying across the face of Mount Rainier."

“My uncle was a close friend of Kenneth Arnold, and that started our family’s interest in UFOs,” said Brad, a regular “watcher” at Bray’s Point who – thanks to recently released British government UFO documents, and new revelations that the FBI kept UFO files in something they dubbed “The Vault” – reveal that a local Pacific Northwest pilot named Kenneth Arnold spotted what the Brits and FBI now confirm as “an actual UFO sighting.” Moreover, the conservative Wall Street Journal has now joined the British government and the FBI in confirming that UFO sightings have increased recently “throughout Asia.” The May 6 Wall Street Journal report stated that “suspicious UFOs have shut down airports in China, buzzed resorts in Borneo and lit up the night sky in Myanmar.”

This story is number eight in an occasional series of reports about what the secret British UFO files contain, and what new information these documents reveal.

Arnold sighting in 1947 mirrors period of 60 plus years that U.S. and FBI held UFO files

Some 60 to 65 years after UFO sightings – that were then covered up -- it’s now known and documented in the recently released British government UFO documents, and also with the revelation that the FBI kept UFO files in something they dubbed “The Vault,” that people such as Kenneth Arnold were dismissed as “UFO nuts.”

Brad, who’s admittedly proud of his family's connection to this famous UFO spotter, notes that “the Kenneth Arnold’s of this world were once viewed as spreading a hoax about UFOs. But, it was no lie. Although many UFO web sites view any information that doesn’t originate from them as a hoax – even in this day and age when the Brits, the FBI and other mainstream sources of reliable information state that UFO sightings are not a hoax – there still needs to be a world-wide announcement that they are here, they’ve been here and we need to deal with alien life among us.”

In turn, Brad points to the Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting that’s now part of the once top secret FBI UFO files that are now in the public domain.

The FBI report states that “on June 24, 1947, while flying his private plane near Mount Rainier, Washington, American businessman Kenneth Arnold reported seeing ‘nine brilliantly bright objects ‘ flying across the face of Rainier.”

Mt. Rainier is a massive live volcano -- at an elevation of 14,411 feet -- located a few hundred miles up the coast from Bray’s Point.

Note: The accompanying photo with this story from May 11, 2011, shows Arnold holding a picture of a drawing of the crescent shaped UFO he saw in 1947.

British government and FBI take notice of Arnold’s UFO sighting

The Washington Post and other “mainstream” news media, both nationwide and internationally, reported on April 12 that the FBI’s newly available online reading room, “The Vault” reveals FBI practices to “burn thousands of UFO files,” while also sharing a declassified “memo” about Roswell being real.

Moreover, both the U.K. and FBI secret UFO files included Kenneth Arnold’s statements about spotting something he called "flat like a pie pan and shaped like saucers and were so thin I could barely see them…they were half-moon shaped, oval in front and convex in the rear… they looked like a big flat disk and flew like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water.”

Also, the London based “Daily Mail,” – that’s covered the recently release British government documents, that number more than 8,500 and include links to tens of thousands of other UFO sighting material – blasted the American FBI for “stirring up conspiracy theorists and spy minded folk across the Internet” with the Vault.

These once secret UFO documents also note that Arnold’s sighting was included in once secret British government and FBI files because “Arnold received significant media attention, and his story captured the public’s imagination.”

In turn, the Washington Post and other mainstream media reported it’s no wonder that the FBI began “destroying thousands of UFO reports,” about strange things relating to UFO sightings that started happening at a place in New Mexico called “Roswell;” the place “where the flying disk” happened.

Wall Street Journal sharing the news of new UFO sightings in Asia

Wall Street Journal writer James Hookway states in a May 6 report – that’s gone viral worldwide on the WSJ website – that “UFO hunters say Asia's surging economy is attracting international attention--and aliens from outer space.”

WSJ's Hookway made his recent report from what he dubbed a “UFO hotspot in Khao Kala Hill in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand.”

“UFO sightings among Asia's fast-growing economies have accelerated,” Hookway writes. “Suspicious UFOs have shut down airports in China, buzzed resorts in Borneo and lit up the night sky in Myanmar.”

The Wall Street Journal – that prides itself in sober, financial news reporting – also contacted some of the world’s leading authorities on the subject so as to dispel regular rumors on UFO web sites that any news about “real” UFO sightings are “a hoax.”

"It's not surprising, really," says Debhanom Muangman, a 75-year-old Harvard-educated physician and one of Thailand's leading UFO investigators. "Aliens have been coming to Asia for decades, but now they sense a change. This is where the progressive countries are, so they are coming here much more often now."

ET is here and alive and well on planet Earth, say experts

Extraterrestrials first hit the public imagination in a big way in Thailand in 2006, when villagers in the rural northeast found discarded fever-cooling gel packs and mistook them for visitors from outer space. One woman told local newspapers she cooked a gel pack and served it to her children in the hope that it would make them more intelligent, states Hookway.

“In Nakhon Sawan province, 160 miles north of Bangkok, scores of UFO enthusiasts now regularly camp out on a hill known as Kao Kala, which they regard as a kind of Stargate to another dimension. It's a diverse group, including medical students, interior decorators and a soap-opera actor who goes by the name Pete. On a recent evening, devotees wearing necklaces depicting alien portraits trooped to the top of the hill to harness extraterrestrial energy to treat illnesses by laying on hands, or to meditate before a statue of Buddha. Periodically, people jumped up with video cameras when planes or other, less obvious, light sources appeared before settling in for a night of chanting,” he said.

Moreover, it’s not just the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the British government and the FBI that point to “real and credible evidence of UFOs,” it’s also regular everyday people like Brad and other Oregon UFO “watchers,” and even village people in Thailand.

"The aliens have been coming here to Kao Kala for at least 10 years," said Dusadee Prasomsuk, 39 years old. "When we meditate we can understand what they're trying to tell us—we feel it through our bodies and we understand. Regardless of whether aliens exist, the slew of sightings is providing yet another measurement of how the world is changing as Asia becomes wealthier and more successful.”

Moreover, there’s Seth Shostak – a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in California – who uses radio telescopes and other advanced equipment to scour the universe for signs of intelligent life.

According to Hookway’s recent Wall Street Journal report, Shostak “reckons the growth of Asia's economies is one of the primary factors contributing to more and more UFO sightings.”

"I ascribe this simply to two things," Mr. Shostak says. "The greater reach of TV, which means that more people have seen television specials dealing with UFOs, and the widespread availability of the Internet, which allows people who would formerly describe strange sightings to their neighbors to now send me an email."

Dr. Debhanom in Thailand, for instance, says he saw his first UFO in New Hampshire when he was training to become a doctor in the 1950s. When Dr. Debhanom returned to Thailand he heard about many more sightings as the country went through its economic boom of the 1980s and 1990s and media networks expanded to include cable TV and, more recently, the Internet.”

Anyone can read parts of the British files on line

The release of these British UFO documents includes 35 large files that can be viewed at

It should also be noted that the files are available to download free of charge for one month at this U.K. National Archives website.

UFO invasion or fishermen tales?

Published on Tuesday 10 May 2011 13:16

COULD Leighton be on the verge of an alien invasion? Well, according to many people in the town there have been some sightings of UFOs over the skies during the past few weeks and now they are searching for answers.

It all started the Thursday before Easter when many readers reported to the LBO office that they had seen these bright lights in the sky which clearly were not aircraft. People thought they may have been a satellite or meteors, but they were unsure because the lights moved like some sort of ‘craft’.

Then on Easter Saturday, a post was made on to an American website by someone calling themselves ‘Britwarrior’ about a strange encounter he and some friends had experienced while fishing at Eggington Fisheries near Leighton.

‘Britwarrior’ said there were seven people in their group who first spotted a very bright star-like object moving west directly in a flight path with oncoming traffic, but slightly higher than planes. He said the light blinked on and off which caught their eye. The fisherman said it got smaller and smaller and then vanished. All this happened at about 9.40pm.

He then explained that the fishermen spent the night scanning the horizon and sure enough more appeared and what was to follow was both “shocking and enlightening”. He exclaimed: “Many were sceptics, but not any more!”

Then even weirder stuff started to unfold as they tended their fishing lines. ‘Britwarrior’ wrote on the web blog: “They looked like stars but hung around for a bit and then just zipped off and reappeared elsewhere. It was really odd to watch. Four of us remained around the fire, bait alarms still on, having a couple of beers and chatting.

“All of a sudden my best friend, who was a sceptic, spotted something directly behind my head. He was talking to me at the time but he just stopped so I looked at him and asked him what was wrong. He was speechless and looked shocked.”

‘Britwarrior’ said his friend muttered some expletive question and then beckoned the others to look – trying to get his words out. He said: “I turned around to see a green disk hovering over the tree tops slowly maybe a mile away, just above the dark treetops. As our eyes adjusted it was a green disk, no trail, with a red ring around it,

“When I first saw it, it was travelling slowly then it picked up very, very rapidly and shot off and just disappeared. In around 10 seconds from first seeing it, it was gone.

“It was shocking. Everyone just went ‘wow, what the hell was that?’ and stood up and started laughing. There was absolutely no sound at all just odd flashes for about 10 minutes after. There were no clouds about in any direction and I checked when I got home that there had been no thunderstorms that night either.

“I know my stuff... we had a police helicopter flying around just before this happened and we could see the oncoming planes’ headlights to the south landing pretty much all night and coming from the west directly over us on approach until late. This was very, very different and I can say 110 per cent it was not any of those things. I have seen many meteors, also this was travelling too slow and horizontal across the treetops.

‘Britwarrior’ added: “I’m stumped and amazed how much you can see going on in the skies at night. I’m back there soon and I will turn my camera on. I’m gutted I cannot share any pictures or videos with you.”

Another ‘bright star’ sighting was registered on a UK website over the same weekend. The witness statement said that a very bright blue silver blob, possibly an oblong sphere-type shape, had been spotted above Wing Road in Linslade. It disappeared after about two seconds.

Another listing was made at the end of last year when someone had spotted a black oblong shape, flying completely silent much lower than aircraft are normally spotted over Leighton.

Shroud of mystery behind Napier fog

DOUG LAING | 11th May 2011

An air of mystery hung over Napier today as bleary-eyed residents searched for an explanation for an early morning awakening by a UFO that seems to have been heard by many, but not seen.

The UFO, or Unknown Fog'Orn, was reported in varying locations east to west in the city, as a series of short blasts, intermittently for at least an hour.

It was heard in Maraenui from 2am to 3am, as both a near and distant sound, from unusually varying directions.

"One minute it sounded as if it was in the driveway, the next it sounded as if it was out towards Awatoto, next minute just down the road, next minute in town," one resident said.

But across town, Taradale resident Denis Hibbs first noted the noise at 3.33am, as if it was just outside.

"It went for about 10 seconds every minute or so," he said, and when it did not stop, he took a walk around the neighbourhood but couldn't find the source.

It continued until 4.25am, he said, concluding it must have been coming from the direction of Hawke's Bay Airport.

Checks with the airport, Port of Napier, Napier Police, Fire Service and Napier City Council provided no clues. The most likely suggestion was it could be a horn or alarm system on a moving vehicle, although it appeared to shift quickly from one location to another.

UFO Sightings on the Rise in Finland

published Tue 11:14 AM

UFO sightings are becoming more frequent in Finland. UFO enthusiasts catch glimpses of hundreds of unidentified objects annually, but most of them turn out to have a logical explanation. Ufologists doubt that the armed forces are concealing information about their own sightings.

A typical UFO sighting involves noticing a bright light moving strangely across the sky in the dark. Hardly anything else can be said to describe the phenomenon, says Lasse Ahonen from the UFO-Finland organisation.

Ufology has been Ahonen’s hobby for the last 46 years. A mere photo is not enough proof for him.

“We always need basic information about the pictures. The internet is full of mere images.”

Planets and debris

There have been considerably more UFO sightings in Finland in recent years. The two organisations in this field, Finnish UFO Research Association FUFORA and UFO Finland, yearly receive some three hundred reports of sightings altogether.

An airplane’s lights or a planet might cause strange light phenomena. Sometimes no further explanation is needed than debris in a camera’s lens. Ufologists say that a natural explanation is found for most cases.

However, a few remain unsolved. Some UFO enthusiasts believe that visits from aliens account for some of them.

“At this stage, all options should be kept in mind and kept open,” Ahonen says.

Conspiracy theories

Several countries have lately published formerly classified official data on UFO sightings. Similar data is also collected in Finland, where explanations made by officials are stored in the war archive. Atso Hapaanen has written a book on the military sightings of UFOs in 1933-1979 on the basis of this data.

UFO enthusiasts disagree on whether the military—and especially the air forces—in possession of any newer material.

“I don’t believe that the Air Force has any UFO maps,” says Björn Borg, researcher from FUFORA.

Borg is also sceptical that the Air Force would conceal anything about it. Ahonen’s opinion differs.

“I consider it very likely that there is observational data,” he says. “Would it not be time for the Finnish defence forces to also move on to the 2000s and follow other countries’ example by opening up more about this,” he inquires.

YLE has also turned to the Air Force for answers, but the Air Force said there were no secrets about sightings.

Chief Public Information Official Joni Malkamäki said that the Air Force checks up on citizens’ observations about 2-4 times a year. According to Malkamäki, information usually comes in about strange light phenomena and less frequently about objects.

“These findings usually fall under atmospheric phenomena, such as meteorites and space debris burning in the atmosphere.”

The Air Force says its own pilots have not seen any UFOs.

Web Abuzz over Elenin Comet and Object(s) Following it

Monday, 09 May 2011

The internet is abuzz over new reports in regards to the Elenin Comet which is headed towards Earth, but more so of what is behind it... Based on reports published by China's space agency, Sergio Toscano, a director for Astronomical Research in Missions, said that behind the Elenin comet could be an UFO approaching.

"Behind the comet, discovered in December last year, Chinese scientists say there is a phenomenon, something they called cluster, which means globular cluster, or perhaps alien spacecraft," said Toscano.

According to the report quoting the astronomer mission, the space body would be found in the comet's tail and was analyzed after the mysterious signals that came off of an unknown "strange and obscure" formation.

In the words of Toscano, the Chinese have said that the spacecraft is stationed in the same place for ninety days, "before that looked like it was coming from an extraterrestrial civilization," said the Argentine scientist.

According to the Daily Chronicle, this phenomenon was corroborated by Rosie Redfiel, the new director of the Program of NASA's Astrobiology.

"But when NASA began to make calculations and projections of comet's orbit, they realized that something was wrong and the first thing they did was remove the website which provided information on this issue," said Toscan

It's nearly 300 million miles away and barreling toward us. The intruder from deep space, called called comet Elenin, crosses Earth's orbit on its inbound leg and again on its outbound swing around the sun later this year.

Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin discovered the innocuous little comet on Dec. 10, 2010, at International Scientific Optical Network's robotic observatory near Mayhill, New Mexico.

Presently the comet is a faint smudge of light in deep sky exposures. By late August comet Elenin should be visible to the naked eye as a dim "fuzzy star" with a tail. Over a few weeks the visitor will speed across the spring constellation Virgo and toward Leo on its outbound leg.

A dizzying collection of doomsday predictions have been linked to comet Elenin. The hysteria was inevitable as anxiety grows over the approach of 2012 -- that is supposedly a game-changing year for life on Earth. At least according to some interpretations of the ancient Mayan calendar.

If you believe the gobbledygook on numerous websites and YouTube videos, this is a "renegade comet" that just couldn't wait for 2012 to mess with the Earth.

Though it's now over twice as far away from Earth than the sun is, comet Elenin has already been blamed for triggering earthquakes and shifting Earth's rotation axis. The comet has also been accused of melting ice on Mars and stirring up a storm on Saturn. It's predicted to flip Earth's magnetic field.

And that's just the beginning. There are numerous "Cometgate" allegations of news media and government cover-up, and the existence of hidden comet shelters for U.S. officials.

The timing of the MESSENGER spacecraft's deceleration in orbit around Mercury last week is also suspect because our innermost planet supposedly "aligns" with the comet's position this month.

Reality Check

Comet Elenin will sweep nearest to Earth on Oct. 16 at a distance of 21 million miles and be moving fast enough to travel the distance from Earth to the moon in under five hours!

The effects of the comet on Earth at closest approach will be as inconsequential as that of a mosquito slamming head-on into an ocean-going supertanker.

Let's look at the physics. Comet Elenin is a loose agglomeration of volatile ices and dust a few miles across. It is therefore one hundred billionth the mass of our moon. (The relative difference is roughly the same as the mass of a mosquito vs. the mass of an oil supertanker.)

The comet will pass no closer to us than 84 times the Earth-moon distance.

Applying Isaac Newton’s laws of gravity, this means the comet's tidal pull on Earth -- at closest approach -- will be approximately one-hundred trillionth the force of the moon's tidal pull on Earth. And, we all now know that despite the dreaded Supermoon hype last week, there were no monster storms or earthquakes triggered by our satellite's gravitational tug at closest approach to Earth.

What's more, comets get the worst end of the deal when they venture near larger bodies -- just like that mosquito slamming into the supertanker.

Some comets dive-bomb the sun routinely. What happens? They disintegrate into pieces.

The same held true for comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 that was ripped apart by tidal forces when it ventured too close to Jupiter. When the comet pieces plunged into Jupiter in 1994, the planet simply belched a few mushroom clouds from titanic impact explosions.

On May 11, 1983 comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock swept within 3 million miles of Earth –- one of the closest comet approaches in modern times. The visitor looked as big as the full moon and sped across a wide swath of sky in just a few days.

That same day saw an explosion of protests in Santiago, Chile against the decade-long rule of General Augusto Pinochet. Unless you’re an astrologer, the comet's influence was not to blame.

The closest ever-recoded flyby of Earth was comet Lexell in 1770, which passed at 1.4 million miles. On Jan. 26th that year a magnitude 9 earthquake took place off the west coast of the North America.

Similarly, many coincidences will happen this year that people will want to blame on comet Elenin. The most bizarre link is that the comet's closest approach to the sun happens on the 10th anniversary of the combined terrorist attacks on the U.S. "Is it a coincidence that Elenin could be seen as "Elevennine" (9/11 backwards)?" asks one conspiracy website.

In the cosmic scheme of things, comet Elenin is simply a nice target for backyard sky watchers to follow. But Earth as a planet isn't phased at all.

No mercy for UFO hacker Gary McKinnon

Gary McKinnon may lose his fight against being extradited to the United States. The 45-year-old Scottish computer hacker was charged by the U.S. with the “biggest military computer hack of all time” in 2001 and 2002 after looking for information about UFOs and extraterrestrials, and has been fighting extradition ever since. There were hopes than an upcoming visit to the UK by U.S. president Barack Obama later this month would result in a breakthrough for McKinnon’s case. But according to the Daily Mail, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder vowed last week to take all necessary steps to extradite Gary.

McKinnon’s mother, Janis Sharp, has been fighting non-stop on behalf of her son. She even wrote an open letter to President Obama, “Pleading with him to end ten years of torment.” She told the Daily Mail that she was “shocked by the response of the U.S. Attorney General.”

Prior to their election, both Nick Clegg, UK’s deputy prime minister, and prime minister David Cameron both said that “Gary can and must be tried in the UK.” But in light of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent comments, McKinnon’s chances of remaining in the UK are slim.

Fire in the Fort Worth sky

Eerie light show in Fort Worth (credit: Brian Luenser)

A storm hit the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas on Tuesday night, bringing lots of thunder and lightning with it. According to the Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate, lightning blew an electrical substation east of downtown, resulting in a chain-reaction of an undisclosed number of transformers blowing, producing an eerie light show that was reportedly captured on video by a Fort Worth CPA and amateur photographer named Brian Luenser from his 34th floor condo.

The video shows hundreds of explosions varying in color, including blue, green, red, and purple.

The Star-Telegram reports that more than 300 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occurred in Fort Worth from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. At approximately 9:00 PM, these events prompted calls to police by residents who were reporting “fireballs,” both in the sky and on the ground. The video recorded by Luenser was reportedly shot between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM.

Bob Ray Sanders, a columnist for the Star-Telegram, witnessed this event, and he stated, “I’ve seen lightning strike, and this was no lightning.” He further described, “I saw fire in the sky and on the ground . . . I saw 10 or 12 explosions. It was like someone was dropping bombs.”

The first thing I think of when I hear the description of “fire in the sky” is the book and movie by the same name: Fire in the Sky—the story of Travis Walton who was allegedly abducted by extraterrestrials.

While some who have watched the video of this light spectacle have commented that the lights are reminiscent of scenes from Hollywood movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Skyline, others have gone gone further, suggesting this light show was caused by extraterrestrials. At various points in Luenser’s video, multiple white lights (or “orbs,” as some have called them) appear in the sky as the explosions of light occur below. Some have speculated that these may have been UFOs, but the lights could simply be lens flare resulting from the extremely bright explosions.

Jaime Molina, a representative from local power company Oncor, told the local NBC affiliate that approximately 4,000 customers in the area lost power following the incident. He didn’t know the number of transformers affected, but he expected that power was restored “very quickly,” as the electrical system is designed to switch to another substation automatically.

National Geographic Channel show ponders the possibility of an alien attack

McClatchy-Tribune News Service

PASADENA, Calif. - What if there really ARE little green men out there in the vast universe who plan to plop their UFO in a cornfield in Nebraska? That's not just a question for science-fiction writers and 10-year-old boys, but for real scientists with alphabets after their names.

"It's my day job, of course, to look for them," says Dr. Seth Shostek, senior astronomer with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI.) "And I can assure you that I wouldn't do that if I didn't think that there was a good chance for success because it is not that lucrative," he says.

Shostek and several other scientists are taking the matter seriously when the National Geographic Channel presents "When Aliens Attack," premiering May 22.

"NASA has a Kepler satellite orbiting the Earth right now. Within 600 days you will know what fraction of stars have planets that are somewhat like the Earth. And the expectation is that the number will come out to between 10 and 50 billion in our galaxy," says Shostek.

"If you don't like our galaxy, there are 200 billion other galaxies we can see, and there's a vast amount of the universe we cannot see. So it comes down to this: if you say, 'No, I don't think that there are any aliens out there,' then you believe in miracles. Because that would be the miracle. The miracle is not that they would be there. The miracle is that they didn't exist. Whether they are here ... a third of the population believes they are here walking the streets abducting you for experiments your mom wouldn't approve of, very few scientists believe that."

So why are the aliens always on attack instead of being ambassadors of goodwill? Shostek says it stands to reason, as Homo sapiens has always reacted to strangers with aggression.

"If you look historically at what's happened here on Earth, the natives of the Americas did not meet your average Spaniard selling fish on the street, they met the aggressive guys. So there's a very strong filter. If they come to town they're probably aggressive. That's not a faulty assumption, I think."

John Ringo, who has written five best sellers on the topic of alien invasions, says that we should screw our courage to the sticking point, just in case. "One of the aspects is even when people come in peace and with the best of intentions, it has a tendency to damage or destroy cultures. So being prepared for this type of thing, there is no reason not to be prepared for a situation. Getting really upset about it, despite the fact that I write in that field, I wouldn't suggest that you worry about the sky falling today."

"It should be as statistical as human nature, for example, that there's going to be good guys and bad guys," says Dr. Travis Taylor, who's with the U.S. Space and Missile Command Department and has worked with the Department of Defense and NASA for 20 years.

"What we would hope is that the good guys show up first, and that would be really nice. But the point of this wasn't to debate whether they are or they aren't, it's what happens if they did. Do we have a plan? What type of plan should we put together, and how would we defend the planet?" Taylor has also written the handbook for harrying aliens, "An Introduction to Planetary Defense."

"Being a scientist, looking up at the sky at night and seeing all the stars and then realizing how many stars there are. You know, in the universe there are so many stars that you can write the number one and 22 zeros after it. That's how many stars we think is in the universe. And we know that planets form around those stars. And so a lot of them are going to be Earth-like. Billions are going to be Earth-like. So it would be a big waste, to paraphrase that Carl Sagan movie, if there wasn't other life out there," says Taylor

Lt. Col. Brian De Toy, director of defense and strategic studies program at West Point, doesn't buy the premise. "I am a skeptical believer in miracles. So a year ago right now I was in Iraq, and I'm more worried about Iraq and Afghanistan right now and the aliens that I'm dealing with there. And so right now, I'm pretty skeptical about the others."

Ringo is a believer. "I personally think that there are probably more planets with life on them in this universe than all of the losses on Wall Street. However, whether we will ever be able to contact them, that is another question."

A Military Post’s Secrets: Espionage, Not Aliens By JANET MASLIN

Published: May 15, 2011At the start of “Area 51,” Annie Jacobsen’s cauldron-stirring book about America’s most mysterious military installation, Ms. Jacobsen offers a passing glimpse of a large-headed little gray space alien being interrogated by scientists in white coats. This is both a tease and a distraction. Yes, Ms. Jacobsen will eventually address the U.F.O. issue with which conspiracy theorists eagerly associate Area 51, but her book is not science fiction. It’s much more levelheaded. It is an assertive account, revelatory but also mystifying, of the long-hidden United States weaponry and espionage programs to which she says Area 51 is home. (Some say Area 51 is home to nothing, because it does not officially exist.)

Annie Jacobsen

An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base

By Annie Jacobsen

523 pages. Illustrated. Little, Brown and Company. $27.99.

What is it about Ms. Jacobsen that has made her privy to such inflammatory material? It’s best to know her answer to this question before delving into her book. And her answer is strange and byzantine in the way that all things about Area 51 seem to be. Ms. Jacobsen, a national security reporter and contributing editor to The Los Angeles Times Magazine, happened to be at a 2007 family dinner with her husband’s uncle’s wife’s sister’s 88-year-old husband, the physicist Edward Lovick, when Mr. Lovick leaned over and said, “Have I got a good story for you.”

That happened to be the year when formerly top secret records about the development of certain stealth technology, most notably the C.I.A.’s A-12 aircraft, code-named Oxcart, were made public, even though the creation of the A-12 had occurred nearly 50 years before. In any case, Mr. Lovick had been instrumental in A-12 research, and he did much more than relate his story.

He plugged Ms. Jacobsen into a network of elderly scientists, pilots, engineers and other witnesses who had firsthand accounts of Area 51 and its surroundings, a test range located in southern Nevada. (“I tell you all this, Annie, because you give a damn,” one of them told her.) This testimony pointed her in the direction of extremely arcane documentation, material of needle-in-a-haystack obscurity. (Sample source: a secret 1948 memo of “European Command Message Control Secret Priority” to United States forces in Austria regarding a glider of parabolic design that might have been flown in the 1920s and then developed into a flying saucer.)

Thus armed with numbingly intensive documentation, Ms. Jacobsen has put together a set of strong allegations about Area 51’s covert history. Part of “Area 51” is devoted to the nuclear weapons testing that began with the Manhattan Project, continued under the aegis of the Atomic Energy Commission and prompted The New York Times to tell tourists, in 1957, about a project called Operation Plumbbob: “This is the best time in history for the non-ancient but nonetheless honorable pastime of atom-bomb watching.” Ms. Jacobsen recoils at the weaponry that was being developed and the ghastly results of atomic testing. But she acknowledges ways in which it wound up keeping Americans safe.

Her book moves on to the surveillance technology that was meant to override the need for nuclear arsenals. And her research into the world of “overhead,” the aerial espionage that needed to be developed in extreme secrecy, is compellingly hard-hitting. One of her sources is Col. Richard S. Leghorn, whom she calls “the father of peacetime overhead espionage.”

She has also spoken to Col. Hervey S. Stockman, the first man to fly over the Soviet Union in a U-2; Col. Hugh Slater, an Area 51 base commander; and Jim Freedman, an Area 51 procurement manager who was one of the few people privy to a wide range of the base’s activities. Ms. Jacobsen writes that not even President Clinton was able to gain full knowledge of what the military contractors at Area 51 were up to.

“Area 51” is guided by its author’s political assessment of changing American military strategy, particularly during the cold war. It describes Area 51’s strategic importance during the eras of Sputnik, the Bay of Pigs, the lunar landing and the Vietnam War, with a strong narrative account of C.I.A.-Air Force territorial fights about whose aircraft were better suited to combat situations.

She also writes about the reverse engineering — the analysis of equipment by taking it apart and reassembling it — at which Area 51 scientists are thought to excel. She acknowledges their work on a Soviet MiG aircraft that was hidden inside a cargo plane for its trip to Nevada. But she does not take seriously what some readers will find most urgent about an Area 51 study: rumors that alien spacecraft are reverse-engineered there, too.

Back to that little gray alien allegedly seen at Area 51: Ms. Jacobsen has a theory about the base’s alleged U.F.O. connections. It goes back to the radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” in 1938 and the panic it engendered. Making a series of implications that are her book’s most controversial aspect, she connects this hysteria to the 1947 alleged flying saucer crash in Roswell, N.M., a story cherished by conspiracy theorists and not easily refuted.

Another Crop Circle Discovered in Indonesia

Really, Jakarta Globe? Do you want your newspaper to be taken seriously? Is there really nothing more interesting to report?

A new crop circle has been reported by a group established to investigate UFO sightings in Indonesia.

Beta-UFO, set up in 1997, said the latest crop circle had appeared in a rice field in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java.

“The locals didn’t know,” group member Julius Perdana told on Monday. “We had to climb up a hill to see it [the crop circle] for ourselves.”

Julius said the crop circle was discovered three weeks ago but the group had only become aware of it on Sunday.

The news portal did not say how the group had been alerted to the find.

He said the crop circle — which fringe groups claim have extraterrestrial origins — was 90 meters long and 30 meters wide in some places and consisted of two circles topped with hexagons.

“There are no police lines or spectators,” Julius said.

He said the design differed from the previously discovered crop circle discovered in Sleman, Yogyakarta, but more closely resembled another discovered in Magelang, Central Java.

Beta-UFO had taken photos of the crop circle and would send them to researchers at Central Java’s Diponegoro University for further examination.

“We will wait for the researchers t0 say whether it is original or man-made,” Julius said.Beta-UFO, a community established in October 1997 to investigate UFO sightings in Indonesia, reported that a new crop circle has appeared in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java.

“The locals didn't know. We had to climb up a hill to see it [the crop circle] by ourselves,” Julius Perdana, a member of the community told news portal on Monday.

Beta-UFO learned about the crop circle on Sunday. After visiting the location, on a farm near Delta Mas housing complex in Cikarang, and talking to the land owner, the crop circle was first found three weeks ago.

According to Julius, the crop circle was 90 meters long and 30 meters wide. The land owner had cut several parts of the circle.

“There are no police lines or spectators,” Julius said, adding that the crop circle is different with the one previously found in Sleman, Yogyakarta but it resembled the one found in Magelang, Central Java. The circle in Bekasi consisted of two circles and a hexagon symbol on top of the circles.

Beta-UFO had taken photos of the circle and would send the photos to researchers at Central Java's Diponegoro University for further examination.

“We will wait what the researchers say whether it is original or man-made,” Julius said.

The heat shield and back shell together form the aeroshell, which will encapsulate the mission's rover and descent stage. The cruise stage will perform critical communication and navigation functions during the flight from Earth to Mars. The mission will launch in late 2011 and deliver its rover, Curiosity, to the surface of Mars in August 2012.

Lockheed Martin built the aeroshell and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory built the cruise stage.

The MSL backshell and the cruise stage departed from March Air Reserve Base, Calif. on an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III transport plane. The plane stopped a Buckley Air Force Base near Denver where the heatshield was loaded on board, and then continued to Kennedy Space Center. The Curiosity rover and its descent stage will be shipped to Florida in June.

Recently, Lockheed Martin integrated the MSL Entry Descent and Landing Instrument (MEDLI) onto the back of the heatshield. Provided by NASA's Langley and Ames Research Centers, MEDLI will collect temperature and pressure data during the spacecraft’s descent through the Martian atmosphere.

“Designing and building such a large and complex aeroshell was truly a challenge, but together with our partners, we have produced what we believe to be an amazing capsule,” said Rich Hund, MSL program manager at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. “We just finished the installation of the MEDLI package. Now we’re looking forward to seeing the data it will return as that knowledge will help determine how we design future Martian entry systems.”

In October 2008, the backshell, half of the large and sophisticated two-part aeroshell, was delivered to JPL in Pasadena, Calif. where it was integrated with other flight systems. The aeroshell/heatshield is the largest ever built for a planetary mission at 4.5 meters (nearly 15 feet) in diameter. In contrast, the aeroshells/heatshields of the Spirit and Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers measured 8.5 feet and Apollo capsule heatshields measured just less than 13 feet.

X-Files Actor to Premiere Conspiracy Documentary May 21

Thursday, May 12, 2011; Posted: 12:05 PM - by BWW News Desk

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, a new feature-length documentary about strange and controversial conspiracy theories by actor/executive producer Dean Haglund, will have its U.S. premiere on Saturday, May 21, at The Retro Dome in San Jose, California. The film follows Haglund as he travels the world, interviewing conspiracy theorists who believe in everything from UFO abductions to secret 9/11 plots by the U.S. government.

"We try to find what the truth is, even though people who believe the same thing often contradict each other," said Haglund. "There's a very fine line between what is valid and what has value. There is value in every point of view, but there is validity in just some points of view."

No stranger to conspiracies, Haglund is best known as Langley, one of the computer-hacking Lone Gunmen in the former hit TV series The X-Files and the Lone Gunmen's own spin-off series. An improvisational comic by training, he felt that it was important to approach the serious issues raised in the documentary with a sense of humor.

"Humor can cut closer to what is true than just a series of hard-hitting facts," he said. "Through my improvisational comedic training, I have the ability to hold the duality of what is true and not true at the same time. That comes in very handy when trying to analyze some of the conspiracies in the film."

Haglund's documentary had its world premiere on April 30 at the British Film Institute in London, where it received rave reviews. "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE is a call to all eager for more knowledge and new insights," wrote Anastasia Hansen of the German publication The Junction. "It is not THE truth that is out there, but rather several truths that wait to be discovered." Marc Hershon of The Huffington Post wrote that the film "examines the world of conspiracy theories in a refreshing and novel way."

"THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE is unlike any film I've ever seen," said director, editor and co-executive producer Phil Leirness, a native of Cupertino, California. "Part of what sets it apart is its spherical structure, a structure that truly embodies the qualities of quantum consciousness that represent the necessary skill set for navigating life in the 21st century. Another unique component that audiences will appreciate is the effortlessly lighthearted tone. This is a film that shows no matter how confusing or scary or overwhelming the world might seem, getting off the Internet, going out into the world, meeting people and searching for the truth is fun. This film is fun, without ever poking fun at anyone, except maybe Dean and me."

The US premiere screening of THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE will be followed by a live installment of the weekly podcast show, Chillpak Hollywood Hour, featuring Haglund and Leirness. The pair will answer questions from the audience and share stories of their adventures on the road. Chillpak Hollywood Hour can be heard at

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE will premiere at The Retro Dome, 694 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, CA 95129-5110 on May 21 at 7 pm. For information, call 408-404-7711. Movie information, trailer and a link to purchase tickets can be found at the official website, Advance tickets can be exclusively purchased at

Other screenings are planned for Malibu, California (June 4), Charleston, South Carolina (June 24), Washington, D.C. (June 29), Los Angeles, CA (July), Atlanta, GA (September 3), Springville, NY (October 8), Melbourne, Australia (October TBA).

Endeavour Lifts Off on Its Final Flight

Philip Scott Andrews/The New York Times

The space shuttle Endeavour lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Monday morning on its way to the International Space Station. More Photos »

Published: May 16, 2011

At 8:56 a.m. Eastern time, the spacecraft rose slowly on a pillar of fire, picking up speed and eventually disappearing from view as it stabbed through a layer of clouds on its way to orbit. Commanding the six-man crew was Capt. Mark E. Kelly, Ms. Giffords’s husband.

The congresswoman, who was shot in the head in an assassination attempt in January, watched in private with relatives of other crew members and said, “Good stuff, good stuff,” as the shuttle rocketed away, according to her chief of staff, Pia Carusone. Captain Kelly’s twin brother, Scott, who is also an astronaut, gave a bouquet of roses to Ms. Giffords, who was wearing her husband’s wedding ring on a chain around her neck.

Outside, crowds that law enforcement officials had estimated could reach half a million people watched the liftoff, the next to last in the 30-year shuttle program.

“It was a fantastic launch,” said Michael P. Moses, director of the mission’s management team. “A great day for us.”

It was the second try at a liftoff for the Endeavour, which was grounded by an electrical short circuit on April 29. NASA officials said that the shuttle’s three main engines performed well during the 8 1/2-minute ascent and that the power system that had been the source of the electrical problem functioned perfectly.

About 40 minutes into the flight, the crew fired maneuvering engines to alter the shuttle’s orbit so it could meet up with the International Space Station on Wednesday, more than 200 miles above the Earth.

Once docked at the station, the astronauts will begin work on the 16-day mission’s main objective: installing the $2 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a giant magnet designed to sift through cosmic particles to find evidence of the elusive so-called dark matter that is thought to pervade the universe.

As the launching time approached, low clouds were the only concern, because NASA rules require good visibility should the shuttle have to make an emergency landing back at the space center. The clouds proved no problem, although they did obscure the view of spectators a little more than 20 seconds into the flight.

“We had the clouds where we needed them, so we went,” Mr. Moses said. “We apologize that the view wasn’t the best.”

About two hours before the liftoff, NASA technicians had to make a quick repair on one of the shuttle’s fragile ceramic tiles, which was found to be damaged when the crew hatch was closed. During the first few minutes of flight, a few small pieces of foam insulation were seen coming off the shuttle’s huge external fuel tank, officials said, but a first analysis suggested that they did not cause any damage to the spacecraft. Damage from falling foam led to the destruction of the shuttle Columbia during re-entry in 2003.

On Monday morning, Ms. Giffords arrived at the launch control center — where family members normally view launchings — about 7 a.m., her chief of staff said. As the weather improved, “she got very excited ’cause it looked like it was a go,” Ms. Carusone said at a news conference. By Ms. Giffords’s side were her mother, Gloria, and Captain Kelly’s two daughters from an earlier marriage, Claire and Claudia. After the liftoff, there were celebratory hugs all around.

Several hours after the launching, Ms. Giffords left the space center for Houston, where she has been recovering at a rehabilitation hospital. Ms. Carusone said that it had not been decided whether the congresswoman would return for the landing, which is scheduled for June 1 about 2:30 a.m.

Asked at the news conference whether Ms. Giffords now understands what happened to her, Ms. Carusone replied, “She’s not aware of everything, but as she processes this, as anyone would, she’s learned more.”

Ms. Carusone said that the brevity of Ms. Giffords’s “good stuff” comment reflected both the difficulty she had in regaining complete speech abilities and the situation. “For all of us, there’s not many words to describe watching the shuttle launch in person,” she said.

She added that there were no plans for Ms. Giffords to make a public appearance. “We’re far from that,” she said. “It’s not a discussion we’ve had.”

This is the 25th and last flight of the Endeavour, which was built after the shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after a launching in 1986. The Endeavour, which first flew in 1992, will eventually be put on display at a science museum in Los Angeles. Only the flight of the shuttle Atlantis, scheduled for July, is left on NASA’s calendar.

In addition to Captain Kelly and the shuttle’s pilot, Gregory H. Johnson, the Endeavour’s passenger manifest consists of four mission specialists: Mike Fincke, Andrew J. Feustel, Gregory Errol Chamitoff and Roberto Vittori, a colonel in the Italian Air Force. The astronauts will conduct four spacewalks, performing maintenance tasks at the station and delivering a crate of spare parts.

New Jersey Mystery Crater Baffles Experts

First Posted: 05/20/11 12:59 PM ET Updated: 05/20/11 01:04 PM ET

What caused this crater in suburban New Jersey? A meteor? Explosives? Experts can't say.

Scientists and police have visited the yard of a Basking Ridge homeowner to attempt to figure out what ripped a hole in the ground and scattered debris across a 100-foot areaon May 8, the Associated Press reported.

The hole is 18 inches deep and the size of a coffee table, according to Bernards Township Police Capt. Edward Byrnes.

"To me it looked like something blew out of the ground because the grass was folded back, the rocks and dirt were all spewn out into the cul-de-sac and across the driveway," said the owner, Sue, who didn't give her last name, because she didn't want crowds coming to gawk at the pit.

The director of the nearby Raritan Valley Community College planetarium inspected the mystery crater and concluded that a meteorite hadn't struck the area.

"It's just really, really weird," said planetarium director Jerry Vinski. "We dug around and couldn't find anything. We used metal detectors because all meteors have metal in them, and we couldn't find anything, large or small."

State police also ruled out explosives.

Can Humanoids Replace Human Astronauts?

Published on May 20, 2011 at 12:59 AM

By Andy Choi

Deep space exploration becomes very easy with humanoid robots and space experts are exploring the possibility of future space crafts being flown by robots and controlled remotely from the earth.

Robonaut2 or R2 is a well-equipped humanoid set on space on the Discovery Space Shuttle in February. It is on board the international space station awaiting directions from NASA. Marty Linn, the R2 project manager, stated that they plan to equip the new R2 to work outside the capsule. R2 is known for its deftness it has the ability to move its hands in 12 different ways, twist wrists and arms in 7 directions and utilizes 54 servo motors. Each hand is embedded with sensors that can sense pressure and weight. Minute motor movements are controlled by a distinct torsion spring. The robot is designed with a human head and a dark visor which makes the humans feel the robot is part of the team and helps the technician to control the robot by using a video relay.

Mundane tasks like disinfecting the hand rails on board the service station are something that astronauts dislike; hence it has been proposed to train R2 to perform such tasks. Human robots are surely a boon but NASA asserts that they will be second to humans as far as deep space explorations are concerned. Technically, we have not advanced to the extent that robots can find extraterrestrial life or discover new planets. Unless we advance tremendously in sensor technology, vision technology and have more efficient computers and motors, we cannot expect robots to replace humans.

New Technique Could Identify Planets With Extraterrestrial Trees

In the search for life on other planets, scientists are looking beyond single-celled organisms and are developing techniques that would help them detect multicellular life. In a recent study published in the journal Astrobiology, researchers are proposing a particular mathematical technique to detect tree-like multicellular structures on extrasolar planets.

"This technique allows us to identify planets that potentially have complex life and distinguish them from planets with simple life," said lead author Christopher Doughty, a junior research fellow in tropical forest science at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford in England. [Is the Rocky Alien Planet Gliese 581d Really Habitable?]

In other words, the authors predict that even when observing planets outside the solar system, scientists would be able to identify a planet with forests by the characteristics of the light that it reflects, even if it looks like just a dot in the viewing lens.

Scientists have come up with various methods to detect life on extrasolar planets.

Some are working to detect the composition of gases in the atmosphere — the presence of oxygen, which on Earth is mainly a by-product of life, could be one such biosignature. Others are focusing on a reflectance signature such as the "red edge," which is the difference between the light that is absorbed for photosynthesis and the light reflected back in other wavelengths of the near-infrared spectrum.

When studying climate on Earth, it is important to understand the brightness of its surface. In order to determine the brightness, scientists must first account for the effect of shadows that are cast by various structures on the surface.

The mathematical technique used to estimate the effect of shadows is what is known as bidirectional reflectance distribution function, or BRDF. It is defined as the change in reflectance of an object viewed from different angles. The method is already used on satellites orbiting Earth.

"Imagine going outside on a sunny day," Doughty explained. "When the sun is directly overhead, you will not see your shadow. If someone took a picture of you from above, there would be no shadows present, and the picture would be bright. Now go outside a few hours later. Your shadow will be present. A picture taken from above will now be darker because the shadow is included."

Trees on Earth developed their canopy form due to the competition for light and the need to transport water and nutrients. The authors of the study predict that if multicellular photosynthetic organisms are found on extrasolar planets, they too will be found to have a tree-like structure that casts shadows. Doughty and his co-author Adam Wolf of Princeton University used a BRDF model to simulate vegetation and how it reflects light at different planetary angles to estimate how the brightness of the planet changed with and without trees. The authors contend that, when viewed from space, forests appear brightest when the observer is in line with the Sun.  This position is known as the "hot spot" because at that location, no shadows are visible.

"Even if the entire planet were reduced to a single pixel, under certain situations, there would be a difference in the brightness of the planet as it rotates around its star that would not be there if there were no trees," Doughty said.

There are other factors that affect a planet's brightness, such as the presence of water. Light reflecting from a planet that is covered in water or ice will make that planet look much brighter than a planet without those features.

The hunt for life

With the discovery of more and more planets outside the solar system, there is growing interest in devising methods to detect life on Earth-sized extrasolar planets. To do this, scientists rely on planetary biosignatures or indications that serve as evidence for both life that may have existed in the past and may exist now.

In addition to atmospheric biogenic gases such as oxygen, another biosignature scientists have already considered is the surface reflectance spectra of vegetation, or the amount of light reflected off plant matter at different wavelengths.

"There are also in situ techniques to look for chemical signs of life in the rock surface of a planet, but this requires actually visiting the planet for direct sampling, like the Martian rovers are doing," said Nancy Kiang, a scientist specializing in terrestrial biometeorology and biogeochemistry at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City. "Astronomical techniques with telescopes look at the radiance spectrum of a distant planet. Up till now, the target biosignatures for telescopes have been biogenic gases and surface biological pigments."

The technique proposed in this study, however, is different.

"This technique [BRDF] can distinguish between a planet dominated by single cellular life and that of tree-like multicellular life," Doughty said.

Kiang said the study was a "good start with an original contribution to the concept of biosignatures." She pointed out that using the BRDF function would require knowing another biosignature — the reflectance spectrum of a plant leaf — in order to select the suitable wavelength to calculate the function.

"This could help distinguish complex life from, say, green slime," Kiang said.

6 UFO Hot Spots Around the World

As Annie Jacobson's new book, AREA 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base, hits shelves, TIME takes a look at other alien-inhabited sites worldwide.

Bonnybridge, Scotland

By Claire Suddath Thursday, May 19, 2011

There's something special about Bonnybridge, Scotland. Since 1992, the small town has been the sight of an unusually high number of UFO sightings. In fact, Bonnybridge lies in what UFO believers call "The Falkirk Triangle," an area of land between the cities Stirling, Fife and the outer neighborhoods of Edinburgh where people routinely report unidentified objects sailing through the sky. The Scottish government says it receives over 300 UFO sightings from Bonnybridge and surrounding areas every year.

Bonnybridge's first UFO sighting occurred in 1992, when a man named James Walker reported seeing a star-shaped object hovering above a road. Other sightings followed and in 1993, the local government held a meeting about the trend. They never came to a conclusion, although alcohol was considered as a possible cause of many of the sightings. UFO reports have continued over the years, leading some people to believe they might be real. "How do we know aliens aren't walking about?" Bonnybridge Councillor Billy Buchanan told The Scotsman newspaper in 2005. "I have no doubt that Bonnybridge is part of something exciting."

SETI@home Project Lets Computer Users Search For Alien Life on 86 Planets

Posted: 05/18/11 12:11 PM ET

As scientists suggest they're close to discovering the first habitable planet beyond our own, 86 individual planets are now being scanned for signs of aliens in the cosmos. And people can use their home computers to join in the search.

In April, the SETI Institute in California announced what it hopes to be a temporary suspension of its efforts to find intelligent signals from outer space. Federal and state budget cutbacks caused a reduction in the use of the Allen Telescope Array in northern California, leaving astronomers who search for extraterrestrial intelligence to ask for public donations to get the array up and running again.

In the meantime, reports that instead of searching the heavens for other solar systems that might contain ET signals, scientists are scanning 86 specific planets with the world's largest steerable telescope, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Radio Telescope in West Virginia.

These extrasolar planets are on the short list of more than 1,200 candidate planets discovered by NASA's Kepler spacecraft.

Only a handful of planets found by Kepler are considered to exist in what's called the Goldilocks zone, a region of space close enough to their home suns where life may have formed.

"We've picked out the planets with nice temperatures -- between zero and 100 degrees Celsius [32 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit] -- because they are a lot more likely to harbor life," said University of California, Berkeley physicist Dan Werthimer, SETI@home's chief scientist.

After the 86 possible planets are scanned, the data will be offered to about a million people who are signed on to the SETI@home project, which allows them to help process SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) information using their home computers.
